Why you feel stiff and foggy by 3pm, and the small fix that isn't a standing desk
I spent years blaming my chair. The problem wasn't where I was sitting. It was that I wasn't moving my feet.

I used to hit a wall every afternoon.
Around 3pm my legs would feel heavy, my lower back would tighten up, and my head would go a bit foggy. That flat, restless feeling where you're at your desk but not really firing. I put it down to lunch, or a bad night's sleep, or just getting older.
Then I noticed something. On the days I moved around more, popped out for a walk, took a call on my feet, ran an errand, I didn't hit the wall nearly as hard. On the days I was glued to my chair from 9 to 5, it was brutal.
The problem was never the chair. It was the stillness.
Sitting still is the thing your body quietly hates
Here's what caught me out. It's not sitting itself that does the damage. It's sitting completely still for hours at a time.
When your feet, ankles and legs stop moving, everything downstream slows down with them. Blood pools, muscles switch off, and that stiff, sluggish feeling creeps in. Your body is built to move little and often through the day, not to sit frozen for four hours and then make up for it with a gym session at 6pm.
Most of us have the opposite pattern. Long still stretches, broken up by the occasional big effort. And the still stretches are winning.
Why the usual fixes don't really land
I tried the obvious things.
A standing desk helped a little, but standing still is just a different way of not moving. My feet still weren't going anywhere.
"Just take more breaks" is great advice that nobody actually follows. When you're heads-down on something, the last thing you do is set a timer to go for a lap of the office.
The gym after work is brilliant for a lot of things, but it doesn't touch the eight hours of stillness that came before it. One hard hour doesn't undo a still day.
What I actually needed was a way to keep moving while I worked. Without thinking about it. Without it becoming another task on the list.
The idea: movement you don't have to remember
This is the thing I've come to care a lot about. Everyday movement. Small, natural movement woven into the day you already live. Not a workout. Not a wellness routine. Just gentle, constant motion happening in the background while you get on with your work.
The knack is having the right thing in the right place at the right time. If moving is effortless and it's right there under your desk, you'll do it without a second thought. If it takes motivation, you won't.
So I made the thing I wished I'd had.
The Gully Desk Movement Board
It's a handmade timber board that sits under your desk and lets your feet move while you work.
Rest it on the cork half-roller and it rocks side to side like a gentle see-saw. Flip it over and it swivels a full 360 degrees. You rock, tilt and swivel through the day without noticing you're doing it, during calls, while you're reading, when you're thinking through a problem. It's low impact, quiet, and a little bit addictive once it's there.
That constant little motion is the kind of everyday movement your body is missing when you sit still. Doing something, gently and often, always beats doing nothing.
And because I couldn't stand the idea of another bit of grey office plastic, we make it properly. Each board is handmade in our Melbourne workshop from sustainably sourced Australian hardwood, finished in a hard-wax oil. It's small enough to live under a desk and nice enough that you'll happily leave it out. It looks like something you'd own on purpose rather than a gadget you hide in a drawer.
What it feels like after a week
For me, the afternoon wall got a lot smaller. Less stiffness through the lower back and legs, less of that 3pm fog, and a strange little urge to keep the board moving whenever I sat down. It's become the most-used thing at my desk.
I purchased the Gully Board to help keep me moving mostly while working from home- it's still early days but so far so good. I like how it keeps my ankles, legs, etc moving- avoids them getting stiff. I almost feel like it would be good to take on a long-haul flight! Quality product- well made, well finished. - TeganÂ

I keep my Gully Board at my desk, it reminds me to keep moving and helps to prevent a stiff back. - Karen

I spend a lot of my day sitting behind a screen and have struggled with Achilles issues, tightness, and soreness. My GP initially prescribed anti-inflammatory medication and therapy, but after just a week of using the Gully Board while working, I feel significantly better—loose and pain-free. I’ve even been able to stop the medication. I was skeptical at first, but I can confidently say this product is like the "chicken soup" for sedentary work life—it just works! - Justin
